PrEP

How does PrEP work?

PrEP prevents the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) from multiplying, making it very difficult for transmission to occur. Clinical trials have shown that PrEP can greatly lower the risk of getting HIV through sexual transmission when taken daily.

Do I need PrEP?

  • HIV risk assessment and pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) assessment are available for service users at HQ.
  • PrEP is recommended for people who occasionally have sex without a condom, don’t know the HIV-status of their sexual partners, have a sexual partner who is living with HIV who does not have a viral load that is undetectable, and people who use injection drugs.

How do I get PrEP?

HQ will offer immediate access to PrEP and PEP in consultation with an on-site healthcare provider. If you are interested in starting PrEP, visit HQ and register via an electronic kiosk, or connect with services on our online portal.

If you are not in Toronto or you need to access PrEP immediately, the Ontario HIV Treatment Network’s OntarioPrEP.ca site can explain how to access PrEP from a health care provider.

If you think you may have been exposed to HIV, visit an emergency room or speak to a healthcare provider about starting PEP immediately.
