Patrick has been involved in the community-based HIV movement dating back to when he learned he was HIV-positive in 1989. He has been a board member of CATIE, the Canadian Treatment Action Council, the Ontario AIDS Network and Fife House Foundation, as well as executive director of the AIDS Committee of Cambridge, Kitchener, Waterloo and Area.
His interest in research led him to serve on the Ontario HIV Treatment Network Cohort Study’s Governance Committee and on the Canadian HIV Trials Network’s Community Advisory Committee and Community Leadership Team, roles in which he contributes to community oversight of research.
In many of his roles he has made use of the managerial and financial skills that he gained through his business degree from Wilfrid Laurier University and his employment at the Office of the Auditor General of Ontario. He has advised several not-for-profit organizations in financial literacy and governance issues
